When is Father’s Day?

For those of us who can’t be bothered keeping track in other ways, here is a short list for you to reference for when Father’s Day is, each year! After all, you never want to miss out on getting a great tool for dad, right?

When is Father’s Day? Father’s Day is on the third Sunday of June each year. According to our friends at Calendar-12.com, Father’s Day 2018 is on Sunday, June 17th (again, the official Father’s Day, just like Mother’s Day, is always on a Sunday in the USA, ever since it was written as a presidential proclamation).

In the 1960s, Lyndon B. Johnson officially made Father’s Day a nationally-recognized holiday by proclamation, though it is not a “federal” or “public” holiday. However, did you know that Father’s Day has actually been recognized and celebrated for much longer, going back to even the early 1900s?

According to sources, Father’s Day was really first celebrated in Spokane, Washington, in 1909. It was an effort headed-up by Sonora Smart Dodd, an Arkansas-born daughter of a Civil War veteran.

How did Father’s Day begin?

Father’s Day began when Sonora Dodd heard a sermon about an Episcopal church honoring mothers and then felt that fathers should have a similar day to honor them. She initially suggested her own father’s birthday for the first occasion on June 5th, however the pastors were unable to prepare until the a bit later.

Why is Father’s Day always on the third Sunday of June?

Father’s Day always falls on the third Sunday of June because the first Father’s Day was on that day. Though it was originally planned for a special honor for fathers on June 5th — the birthday of Sonora Smart Dodd’s father — the pastors were unable to be successfully prepared and thus it was pushed back to the third Sunday.

It is most likely that Lyndon Johnson’s decision to make the third Sunday of June the officially marked Father’s Day was tied to this history.

Father’s Day became an official holiday when Lyndon B. Johnson signed a presidential proclamation in 1962. Before that time, Father’s Day, though celebrated in many areas throughout the country, had no officially-recognized date of celebration by the government.
